Our must have apps for the iPhone!

We love iPhone applications. Heck we may even be making one of our own, but here are a few of our absolute favorites. Most are free – some are fee – all are worthy. (we are not).

  • GeoPedia – GeoPedia is basically a location-based Wikipedia interface for your iPhone.
  • AmazonMobile – The note/snapshot feature is still pretty cool!
  • iTransitBuddy – a robust, easy to use public transportation schedule application. Multiple cities including Chicago.
  • enCamp – BaseCamp application for the iPhone. Best of breed so far.
  • Facebook – We hate and love this app. Mostly love it.
  • GuitarToolKit – Guitar players this has chords, an accurate microphone-based tuner, metronome and more. Very cool.
  • Kindle for the iPhone – You don’t carry your Kindle everywhere but you carry your phone. The UI is super easy and readable.
  • NowPlaying – Movie listings, ratings and more.
  • OmniFocus – It’s expensive but nothing does GTD better.
  • PhoneFlix – Netflix client for iPhone. Very useful when a movie idea hits you on the train.
  • Skype – VOIP for your iPhone. We eagerly await SMS capabilities in the upcoming releases.
  • SpeedTest – Cuz we’re paranoid that our bandwidth is less than it should be. This app tests WIFI and EDGE/3G bandwidth speeds.
  • Tweetie – Absolutely the category killer for twitter clients. Worth the money.
  • Weatherbug – The best weather information we’ve seen to date.
  • WordPress – If you’ve got a blog post that needs to be up now. This is the app for you.
  • FSS Hockey: Because when you’re waiting for half an hour to be seated at a restaurant, it’s time for a few games of air hockey.
  • ICanHasCheezBurger: Lolcats and LOL generation optimized for the iPhone.
  • Labyrinth – the most beautifully designed game application. This person knows physics.
  • Remote – if you have wifi, this app works with keynote.
  • CTABusTracker – really a web page, but use it alot and is very accurate.
  • Shazam – this music analyzer works surprisingly.
  • New York Times – they have made it more sophisticated, but it is also more unreliable.
  • Pandora – use it every day and very easy to use.
  • WunderRadio – great streaming radio application.
  • Units – the best designed measurement application
  • Bejewelled 2 - It’s addictive like crack.
  • Ocarina. $.99 turns your iPhone into a flutelike musical instrument.

Honorable mention (not quite applications)

  • TrafficGauge – Very easy to digest traffic info for your favorite major metropolitan areas. I use this web app EVERY day.
  • Meebo – use it every day

Do you have favorite apps that you can’t live without? Do share!

I have a few I’d throw in there – I’m becoming a HUGE iPhone app junkie… I need some intervention…

1. Evernote. This is something I use so often it’s scary. It’s a note taking (text, pic or voice) app. There is a free Mac/PC desktop app and they all sync. Web clip tool comes with desktop apps so you can grab stuff quickly and save it.

2. FreeMemory. If you use your iPhone as much as I do, there are times when it starts to slow down because some lame app hasn’t released the RAM like it should have. FreeMemory does what you think – frees up RAM.

3. OneDisk / FlashDrive (from Readdle). Allows easy access to the iPhone storage like a drive (via web page/wireless). Also allows access to your .Mac iDisk and other online storage (box.net).

4. MediaFly. Podcast tool. I’m still trying this one out but so far I like it. One of the TV/Media devices I have at home (Popcorn Hour Networked Media Tank) uses it as well. Your account subscribes to all of your podcasts and gives you access (Audio & Video) on your device with the option to preload.

5. UltraList. Just a simple list app – on steroids.

6. JAM! I have 5 WordPress sites and love the WordPress app. This is the same thing but for my 10+ Joomla sites. Works surprisingly well. I’ve also tried BlogPress but it’s just not in the same league.

7. Analytics – I love checking out my Google Analytics and now I can do it anywhere… (On a side note, check out Woopra for the coolest web stats out there)

8. Newsstand. This has to be one of the coolest RSS readers out there.

9. Mint.com / PageOnce – I can’t make up my mind on which of these I like. They are different yet similar apps to track personal spending / wealth (or lack of).

10. Box.net This is a great online storage site and they made a great iPhone app to make it mobile.

11. IM+ For those that need to use Instant Messaging still (I know, it’s soooo 2006) this is one of the best out there. Allows forwarding to email when app is closed.

12. WootOn! I can’t believe you didn’t list a Woot! app?

13. StarMap / Knot Guide / iBird PRO / Camera Plus / ColorSplash / Mobile Photos / Night Camera. I’m in Scouts with my boys and I use all of those for Merit Badges I teach (Photography/Cinematography/Bird Study). StarMap and iBird are simply amazing.

14. Nerd Apps. LogMeIn. Ever need to remotely control your computer at home? jNetUtil – Ping/WhoiS/etc. WEPGen – create or remember HEX/ASCII WEP/WPA/WPA2 codes. FTPOnTheGo. Full FTP app. SpeedTest.

15. Misc Apps. vCards – send any contact as a vCard attachment. Betty Crocker CookBook. Measures – great app for conversions. MLB At Bat 2009 & Sportacular. MyWeather is my favorite weather app. Weather Bug is evil :-)

16. Homework – if you have trouble remembering 8th Grade Math formulas. Math’s Tool! / Math Solver (my favorite) / Math Ref /Calculus Formula’s / Date Calc

17. Games – Field Runners – addicting. Flight Control. Rick Pro. Baseball 09. Crayon Physics – weird fun. Line Rider and the ever popular iChalky. Did I mention iFart?
